Body Mass Index sorts weight-for-height into four broad bands: underweight (BMI under 18.5), normal or healthy (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), and obese (30+). The table below converts those BMI cutoffs back into actual pounds for each height, so you can see your healthy range directly instead of doing the math.

Why BMI Isn't the Whole Story

BMI is a fast population-level screen, but it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat or account for where fat is stored. A muscular athlete can read “overweight” while carrying very little body fat; an older adult can read “normal” while carrying too much. For a fuller picture, pair BMI with body-fat percentage, waist-to-hip ratio, and your ideal-weight estimate — no single number is a verdict.

Methodology & Caveats

  • Formula: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². The weight thresholds are the inverse at BMI 18.5, 25, and 30, converted to pounds.
  • Categories follow the standard WHO/CDC adult cutoffs. They do not apply to children, pregnant people, or competitive athletes.
  • BMI screens, it does not diagnose. It ignores body composition, fat distribution, age, and ethnicity-specific risk thresholds. Treat it as a starting point, not a conclusion.
